Navigating the 2026 Cross-Border Tariff: Our Commitment to Our U.S. Community

With the U.S. Presidential Proclamation under Section 338 now in effect, a 50% import tariff is actively being applied to Canadian goods entering the United States, including artisan furniture.

We want to reassure our community upfront: Kootenay Beds is strong, stable, and absolutely staying in business. Half of our workshop’s production supplies our local Canadian market, meaning our craftsman schedules and business foundations are completely secure. We believe custom, sustainably crafted furniture should not be penalized by sudden international trade disputes, and we are committed to providing complete transparency and risk protection for all our U.S. clients.

Policy for New U.S. Orders

To protect new buyers securing a woodworking schedule today, we have updated our U.S. Tariff Protection Guarantee:

  • Price & Slot Locking: When you place your order, your production slot and current base pricing are locked in. Your order secures your raw lumber and queue position.
  • Upfront Tariff Collection with 100% Refund Protection: We will collect the required tariff at checkout on new orders. Because our current build backlog is 3 to 4 months, if the trade dispute is resolved, negotiated down, or struck down in court before your bed crosses the border, we will refund 100% of the collected tariff directly back to you.
  • Voluntary Freight Pausing: If the tariff remains active when your build is completed, you can still request that we hold your completed bed in our warehouse 100% free of charge until the border situation changes.
  • Standard Commercial Clearance: For corporate, retail, or interior design partners writing off import duties as a business expense, our broker (ClearitUSA) provides full documentation for a seamless corporate tax filing trail.

Options for Existing U.S. Orders

If you placed your order prior to the tariffs taking effect, you have three flexible paths when your bed is ready for delivery:

  1. Pay Prior to Shipping: Pay the tariff duty when your bed completes production so it can clear U.S. Customs immediately.
  2. Complimentary Warehousing (Freight Pausing): Have us store your completed bed safely in our workshop entirely free of charge until the tariff dispute is resolved or suspended.
  3. Order Restocking: Request to cancel and restock your bed under our standard terms, with adjustments applied based on the current production status of your custom build at the time of cancellation.

We remain fully committed to our American customers and will continue navigating these shifting border regulations with complete transparency. Craftsmanship knows no borders, and we thank you for standing with our independent workshop.
